Which domain ending should I pick?
Guide
Checked 25 Oct 2026, 06:58 UTC
Get the .com if you can. If not, pick a domain ending (also called an extension) on its renewal price, not the first year: some cheap starts cost several times more from year two.
How do the endings compare on price?
The .com, .net and .ai keep one price; most others rise from year two.
| Ending | First year | Each year after |
|---|---|---|
| .com | $11.08 | $11.08 |
| .net | $12.52 | $12.52 |
| .org | $7.98 | $11.84 |
| .app | $8.75 | $14.93 |
| .dev | $8.75 | $12.87 |
| .co | $15.76 | $31.20 |
| .io | $28.12 | $51.80 |
| .ai | $82.70 | $82.70 |
| .xyz | $2.04 | $14.21 |
| .tech | $6.99 | $50.98 |
| .store | $2.57 | $43.77 |
These are Porkbun's prices on 24 Oct 2026; other registrars differ. Porkbun sells .ai for 2 years at a time, so it costs $165.40 to start. Check one name on all 11 in Domain names.[1, 6]
Do industry endings save money?
Only in the first year. .fit costs $2.06, then $26.26 a year; .beauty costs $1.54, then $14.21; .cafe costs $4.63, then $46.86.[1]
Do any endings have special rules?
Yes: .app and .dev sites only work over HTTPS, because both endings are on browsers' HTTPS-only list. Plan a security certificate before you launch.[2, 3]
Does a non-.com ending hurt you in search?
No. Google says its search treats new endings like .com and .org, and that keywords in an ending give no advantage or disadvantage. So keeping your exact name on .co or .app beats changing the name just to get a .com. Check your name on the .com and other endings at once.[4, 5]
