What can an X username contain?
Letters, numbers and underscores, up to 15 characters. X's own rules add:
| Rule | What it means |
|---|---|
| No symbols, dashes or spaces | Underscores are the only extra character |
| No "X" or "Admin" | Usernames containing these words can't be claimed, except by official X accounts |
| Username and name differ | Your display name can be up to 50 characters; the username stays short |

How do you sign up for X?
- Check the name above, with Instagram and the .com.
- Sign up on x.com or in the app with an email address or phone number, and verify it.
- Pick your username. You can change it later in settings, if the new one isn't taken.[3]
What should you know before you start?
| Fact | What it means |
|---|---|
| Inactive names stay taken | X says it can't release inactive usernames |
| Suspended and deactivated accounts | Their usernames aren't immediately available either |
| Log in every 30 days | Accounts can be removed after long inactivity |
| Email stays private | An email used to sign up isn't shown publicly |
What can go wrong, and how do you fix it?
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| The username looks unused but won't save | A suspended, deactivated or inactive account holds it. Pick a close version (what to do when your handle is taken) |
| X rejects the username | Remove dashes, dots, spaces and the words "X" or "Admin"; keep it to 15 characters |
| You want a name that's too long | Put the full name in your display name, which allows 50 characters |
