What makes a good business name?

A good business name is distinctive, easy to say and spell, and available as a .com and on the social platforms you need.

RuleWhy
Distinctive, not descriptiveThe USPTO rates invented and unrelated words as strong, and descriptive names as weak
Not close to a trademark in your fieldSimilar names for related goods can be refused, even when they aren't identical
Easy to remember, say and spellThe USPTO suggests weighing this before you choose
Letters and numbers onlyX allows underscores but no hyphens; a .com allows hyphens but no underscores
15 characters or fewerThat's the longest username X allows
Not registered in your stateMost states refuse a name someone else already registered

How do you check if a business name is available?

Use our checker: one search covers the .com, Instagram, X, LinkedIn and US trademarks.

Check your name

The SBA also says to check names against the USPTO's trademark database. Our trademark check looks for live marks with the same name, but a similar mark can block you too. Our checks read each platform from the outside, so confirm a name when you sign up (how our checks work). We don't check state business registries, so search your state's too.[2, 3]

How do you register a business name?

The SBA lists four ways to register a business name, and each one protects something different.

RegistrationWhat it does
Entity nameProtects the name in your state
DBA ("doing business as")No legal protection, but may be required
TrademarkProtects the name across the US
Domain nameProtects your website address

The four are legally independent: registering one doesn't give you the others.[3]

Do you have to trademark a business name?

No. The USPTO says you aren't required to register a trademark, but registering changes how far your rights reach.

Without registration, your rights come from using the name, and only in the area where you use it. Registration puts your name in the USPTO's public database and lets you use the ® symbol. Read do I need a trademark before I launch?[6]
