Threads username checker and rules
We check Threads through Instagram, because a Threads profile made with Instagram shares its username. Confirm the name in the Threads app when you sign up. How our checks work
What can a Threads username contain?
Letters, numbers, periods and underscores, up to 30 characters, the same as an Instagram username. Meta doesn't publish these rules; guides agree on Instagram's, and our checker applies them to Threads.[9, reported]
How do you sign up for Threads?
Download the Threads app and continue with your Instagram account, your Facebook account, or an email or phone number.
- Check the name above, with Instagram and the .com.
- To match your Instagram name, claim it on Instagram first.
- Download Threads from the App Store or Google Play, then tap Continue with Instagram or Continue with Facebook.
- Choose a public or private profile, review the fediverse sharing settings, which can show your posts on other apps, then tap Join Threads.[1, 2, 7]
What should you know before you claim a Threads username?
Threads and Instagram usernames go to whoever claims them first and can't be reserved.
| Fact | What it means |
|---|---|
| Shared names | A profile made with Instagram shares its username; one made with Facebook, email or phone can differ |
| Changing it | You can change your username on Threads. If it's shared with Instagram, features such as cross-posting and Meta Verified may change |
| Linked accounts | Deactivating your Instagram account also deactivates your Threads profile |
| Inactive names | Meta asks people to log in and use both apps, and doesn't promise to release names from inactive accounts |
| Trademarks | Owners of a registered trademark can report an account that uses it as a username |
What can go wrong with a Threads username, and how do you fix it?
Most fixes start in the Instagram account your Threads profile is linked to.
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| The name is taken | Use a close version on both apps; the checker finds one available on your other platforms too (what to do when your handle is taken) |
| Your Threads and Instagram names differ | Put both in the same Meta account (Accounts Center) to share one username |
| Your Threads profile disappeared | Check whether the linked Instagram account was deactivated |
Which platforms should you claim with Threads?
Instagram (the same username), Facebook, X, Bluesky and the .com. See every social media platform we check, then read Growing Threads.
Checks Threads, Instagram, Facebook, X, Bluesky and the .com in one search.
