What can an App Store app name contain?
Up to 30 characters, including spaces, and it must be unique: one app per name in each language. Apple's App Review Guidelines add:
| Rule | What it means |
|---|---|
| No stuffing | No trademarked terms, popular app names, prices or irrelevant phrases |
| Your brand only | No one else's trademark without permission, and no copycat names |
| Subtitle | A separate line of up to 30 characters |
What do you need to join the Apple Developer Program?
An Apple Account with two-factor sign-in and the $99 yearly fee; organizations also need a D-U-N-S number and a website on their own domain.
| Individual | Organization | |
|---|---|---|
| Account | Apple Account with two-factor sign-in | Apple Account with two-factor sign-in |
| Eligibility | Legal age where you live | A legal entity; no trade names or branches |
| Proof | Legal name and street address | D-U-N-S number, work email and website on your domain |
| Seller name shown | Your legal name | Your company's legal name |
How do you get your app name?
What should you know before you start?
| Fact | What it means |
|---|---|
| Seller name | Sole proprietors enroll as individuals, so their own name shows |
| D-U-N-S first | Free; up to 5 business days, plus 2 for Apple to receive it |
| Real website | Social pages and registrar holding pages aren't accepted, so set up your .com first |
| Removing an app | You lose its name, and can't restore it if someone else takes it |
What can go wrong, and how do you fix it?
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| The name is already in use | Rename or remove your own app that uses it, or file a trademark claim against another developer. Otherwise pick a close version |
| Enrollment is slow | Use your legal name, not an alias. No confirmation after 24 hours? Contact Apple |
| "Not a legal entity" | Correct your Dun & Bradstreet profile, then allow 2 business days |
| Website rejected | It must be public, working and on your own domain |
Which platforms should you claim with your app name?
Google Play, the .com, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn.
Checks App Store, Google Play, the .com, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn in one search.
