What can a Bluesky handle contain?

Letters, numbers and hyphens, 3 to 18 characters before .bsky.social. Underscores, periods, spaces and exclamation marks aren't allowed.

How do you sign up for Bluesky?

Sign up at bsky.app with a name.bsky.social handle; you can switch to your own domain afterward.

1. Check the name above, with the .com and X.
2. Sign up at bsky.app or in the Bluesky app, and pick your .bsky.social handle.^{[1, 3, 7]}

How do you use your own domain as your Bluesky handle?

In Settings, then Account, then Handle, choose "I have my own domain" and add the _atproto TXT record Bluesky shows you. The whole handle can be up to 30 characters, Bluesky's help center says, so a .dev domain leaves 26 for the name. The AT Protocol itself allows much longer domains.^{[1, 2, 3]}
