What makes a good domain name?
A good domain name is short, easy to type, and uses only the characters every ending accepts: letters, numbers and hyphens.
| Rule | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Up to 63 characters | The limit before the ending, on all eight endings |
| Letters, numbers and hyphens | Spaces, underscores and symbols don't work |
| No hyphen first or last | Nor two hyphens in the 3rd and 4th places |
| Capitals don't count | Brand.com and brand.com are the same name |
| HTTPS on .app and .dev | Sites on both endings load only over HTTPS |

How do you check if a domain name is available?
Type it into our checker: one search covers the .com, .net, .org, .co, .io, .ai, .app and .dev. Our checks read each ending from the outside, so confirm a name when you register it (how our checks work).
For more endings, see Domain names.
How much does a domain name cost?
It depends on the ending: at Porkbun the .com keeps one price, and five of the eight endings below cost more after year one.
| Ending | First year | Each year after |
|---|---|---|
| .com | $11.08 | $11.08 |
| .net | $12.52 | $12.52 |
| .org | $7.98 | $11.84 |
| .co | $15.76 | $31.20 |
| .io | $28.12 | $51.80 |
| .ai | $82.70 | $82.70 |
| .app | $8.75 | $14.93 |
| .dev | $8.75 | $12.87 |
These are Porkbun's prices; other registrars differ. Porkbun sells .ai for 2 years at a time. Not sure which ending to pick? Read which domain ending should I pick?[5, 6]
Can you change a domain name after you register it?
No. Porkbun calls domain names non-editable, so you register the new name and redirect the old one to it.
Google says to keep redirects in place as long as possible, generally at least a year. Keep the old domain renewed while they run.[7, 8]
