Naming a skincare line

Check the name everywhere you'll sell, then check the words and the trademark classes. Do it before you print a label.

Which platforms and checks does a skincare name need?

Check five things in order: availability, trademarks in classes 3 and 5, drug claims, empty words and the domain's renewal price.

  1. The name is available on the .com, Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest and Shopify. Check them all at once, with trademarks, in the box below. Shopify's myshopify address can be changed only once.
  2. No live trademark uses it for cosmetics (class 3) or medicated products (class 5).
  3. It makes no drug claim, such as "regrow" or "SPF".
  4. It skips words with no legal meaning, such as "hypoallergenic".
  5. You can afford the domain's renewal price, not just the first year.[1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 9]

Checks the .com, Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, Shopify store and Trademarks in one search.

Which trademark classes does a skincare line need?

Class 3 for skincare and makeup, plus class 5 for any medicated product, such as an acne treatment.

One class costs $350 in the US, €850 in the EU or £205 in the UK. Each extra class adds $350 in the US, €50 to €150 in the EU and £60 in the UK. Tools and services have their own classes: see Trademark classes for beauty brands.[2, 5, 6, 7]

Which words should a skincare name avoid?

Words that promise to treat the body, like "regrow" or "regenerate," which the FDA lists as drug claims. These are US rules; other countries differ.

"SPF" makes a moisturizer a drug as well as a cosmetic, and "hypoallergenic" has no federal definition. The full list is in Words to avoid in a beauty name.[3, 4]

Should a skincare brand use .skin or .beauty?

Only if the .com is taken. Both cost $1.54 the first year, then $14.21 a year.

EndingFirst yearEach year after
.com$11.08$11.08
.skin$1.54$14.21
.beauty$1.54$14.21
.care$11.84$39.65
