What makes a good app name?
A good app name is simple, memorable, easy to spell and hints at what the app does, Apple says. It also has to fit in 30 characters on both the App Store and Google Play.
| Rule | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Keep it to 30 characters | Both stores cap names at 30; the App Store also needs at least 2 |
| Be distinctive | Apple warns against generic terms and names close to existing apps |
| Don't stuff it or borrow brands | Apple bars trademarked terms, popular app names and prices in names |
| No emojis, rankings or prices | Google Play bans them, and ALL CAPS unless it's your brand |
| Prefer invented or unexpected words | The USPTO rates them stronger than plain descriptions |
| Aim for 15 characters | X usernames can't be longer than 15 characters |

How do you check if an app name is available?
Type it into our checker: one search covers the App Store, Google Play, the .com and X. Our check can't see apps that aren't on sale yet, so App Store Connect has the final say.
See every app store we check, or domain endings and trademark classes for tech and software brands. Naming the company too? Try the business name generator.
What if your app name is already in use?
On the App Store, each name can belong to one app per language. If your own app holds it, rename or remove that app; if another developer does and you own the trademark, you can file a claim. On Google Play, the package name is what must be unique, and it can't be reused. The App Store page has the details.[4, 5]
Can you change an app name after launch?
Yes, on both stores. Apple lets you edit the name until you submit the app for review, then with each new version. Google Play lets you change the title later, but your package name is permanent. Steps: App Store and Google Play.[2, 5]
