Basics
What does a Basename do?
It stands in for your 0x address: people can send to name.base.eth on Base and on other chains whose apps support ENS.
How do you set up your Basename?
Set it as your primary name in Profile Management on base.org/names, then fill in your profile.
- Connect the wallet that holds the name at base.org/names. No name yet? Check one.
- Set it as your primary name.
- Add your bio, avatar, links and handles.
Each change is a transaction, and everything you publish is onchain, so leave out anything private.[1, 2]
Advanced
How do apps read a Basename?
Through ENS. Basenames follow ENS's ENSIP-19 standard, so an app finds an address's name on Base with Viem's getEnsName. Much of the .eth guide applies too.
| Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
| Library | Viem, with Base's coin type |
| RPC | Base says a private RPC provider is necessary |
| New names | They can take a while to resolve, while proofs are produced |
